Microplastic Risks in Baby Bottles Prompt Industry-Wide Material Shift
2026-05-14
Growing concerns over microplastic shedding from plastic baby bottles are driving a major industry transition. Recent research confirms that heating polypropylene (PP) bottles to 70°C (158°F) — a common temperature for formula preparation — can release up to 16 million microplastic particles per liter. Infants fed with such bottles may ingest an average of 1.6 million particles daily.
In response, manufacturers are increasingly prioritizing glass, stainless steel, or high-purity silicone alternatives. These materials release negligible microplastics even under high heat or repeated sterilization. The shift is also fueled by consumer demand: over 60% of parents now check microplastic safety before purchasing feeding products. Industry analysts predict silicone and glass bottles will account for more than 50% of the market by 2028.
